Originally
from Ohio, Jim was an equine enthusiast from a very
young age and operated a boarding stable on the
family farm. After earning his bachelor's degree and
doing post-graduate studies at Ohio State, he earned
a doctorate from the University Of Georgia, College
Of Veterinary Medicine. He then joined a sports
medicine practice at Belmont Park in New York
working exclusively with thoroughbred racehorses- he
remained there until 1992.
Dr. Hamilton now resides and practices in the
Sandhills as a partner in Southern Pines Equine
Associates with Dr. Tom Daniel. The practice
provides complete medical and surgery services to
the rapidly growing horse community in southern
North Carolina. Dr. Hamilton is the author of
"Equine Emergencies on the Road",
published by Blue Green Publishing. "Equine
Emergencies on the Road" is a glove compartment
manual on prevention and treatment of enroute
illness and injury of horses. This manual is on the
United States Pony Club's "must read" list for 1995.
His interest is in equine sports medicine,
especially respiratory, orthopedics and diagnostics.
In 1997 he became involved in the AVMA's Disaster
Response Program as Team Commander of VMAT-3 (http://www.avma.org/vmat/default.asp).
Hamilton is a member of the American Veterinary
Medical Association, American Association of Equine
Practitioners, American Academy of Veterinary
Disaster Medicine, and a past member of the United
States Pony Club's National Safety Committee. In
1998, work done to help the state veterinary
association (NCVMA) organize a disaster plan earned
Jim the "Veterinarian of the Year" award. The
disaster preparedness work done in North Carolina
has led to the creation of NCSART, NC State Animal
Response Team and serves as a model for what a state
can do to protect its animal population (www.ncsart.org).
In 2002 Jim accepted the position of Vic President
of the organization assisting Dr. Tom McGinn, who,
in addition to the Presidents role, is the Assistant
State Veterinarian for North Carolina.
In 2002, the American Association of Equine
Practitioners formed a taskforce to address the
issue of equine in disasters and named Dr. Hamilton
as the Chair. This group hopes to guide the AAEP in
the role it should play in responding to as well as
mitigating disasters affecting the equine
population.

A
native Floridian, Tom returned to the
University of Florida for his Veterinary
Degree after receiving his B.S. from
Duke University. He then completed a
private practice internship at Apex
Veterinary Hospital in southeastern
North Carolina in order to gain some
practical sport-horse and pleasure-horse
experience. From 1989 to Present, he has
made his home in Southern Pines, NC,
first as the sole practitioner of
Pinecrest Equine, and now as a partner
in Southern Pines Equine Associates with
Dr. Jim Hamilton. He is a member of the
American Association of Equine
Practitioners, the American Veterinary
Medical Association, and the
International Veterinary Acupuncture
Society.
During the time that he has practiced in
Southern Pines, his focus has
concentrated primarily on Sport-Horse
medicine, but he also includes broodmare
management and alternative therapies
among his areas of interest. He
completed the International Veterinary
Acupuncture Society course and has
integrated the Eastern approach into his
practice with some very exciting
results. He feels that the complexity of
syndromes experienced by the various
disciplines of the sport-horse requires
a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic
approaches that are being offered in his
veterinary practice with James Hamilton.
In the summer of 2000, Dr. Daniel
received the great honor of joining the
U.S. Equestrian Team as the team
veterinarian for the 4-in-Hand World
Championships held in Germany. That team
went on to finish 6th overall- the best
finish for the U.S. Team since 1990.
